Laneway House

Laneway house - Cabbagetown

The house for a single art gallery owner in the Cabbage town neighborhood of Toronto specifies a one-bedroom home that embeds Asian culture in the house. To incorporate the Victorian architecture style, cladding in pale concrete masonry and red bricks cooperatively form the facade of the house to not only indicate the beauty of the combination in terms of color and material but also establish the connection to the neighborhood. The upside-down "L" shape exterior space allows the owner to enter the house from west and south. A 52" diameter circle skylight above the middle of the exterior space between two entrances brings natural light into the patio. The house is divided into three different function zones that are connected by the second floor to establish an integral interior space.
The tearoom on the main floor provides the owner with a peaceful and private environment to have tea and meditate. The main floor has a tearoom/ office, kitchen, and living room giving the owner easy access to entertaining space, and the upper floor is designed to create a relatively
quiet and private space, and thus the bedroom is located on the south-east corner of the room to eliminate the noise from the laneway. Facilitating further engagement with the outdoors is a large south-facing terrace adjacent to the reading area where is eô€€…equipped with a long console table.
The house offers an engaging experience of discovery and a sense of Zen through both the interior and exterior. Merging the traditional element into new technology and combining western and eastern culture create an infinite possibility.

Townhouse - Renovation

We believe that design should always be people-centered. Good design can greatly enhance the interaction between people and space, and its true purpose lies in meeting the client’s needs. For this project, the clients are a young couple, currently without children but planning for the future, and they have no pets. Their requirements include a space for hosting dinners that can accommodate 6-10 people, a large kitchen island where they can cook while watching TV, a dedicated workspace, and a cozy area to enjoy coffee or tea alone with a view of the yard. They imagine an atmosphere where they can cook while looking at the trees, listen to birdsong, and enjoy a gentle breeze as they drink coffee or eat breakfast. The current layout has several drawbacks: there is no designated dining or gathering area, no suitable living room setup for entertaining or watching TV, too many unnecessary walls, outdated tile colors, wall paint that feels too cold, and a popcorn ceiling. Additionally, there’s no kitchen island, which limits the space's functionality. To address these issues, the design changes include removing the partition in the original kitchen area and adding an LVL beam to open up the dining area and create better flow. The original kitchen space will be converted into a dining and gathering area, with a movable dining table to accommodate various hosting needs. We’ll remove the bar-height counter to further open the space, while keeping the stove and vent on the same side to reduce labor and material costs. Positioning the kitchen near the window allows the owners to enjoy the view while cooking or having tea. A 13-foot kitchen island will be added to enhance dining and storage options, along with a tall cabinet that the clients love, which adds both storage and cohesiveness to the space. Finally, a small coffee corner will be included as a space for coffee breaks or work, offering a scenic view of the outdoors.

This project focuses on transforming the entire apartment to evoke the feeling of a “breeze brushing gently against your face.” A new dressing room was added to replace the original walk-in closet, significantly maximizing space while creating a cozy nook for the client.
